Medjool dates are an aromatic and flavorful fruit. These are wrinkled in appearance and very dark purple-brown in color. Dates are most commonly served dried and often paired with cheeses or used as dessert. Drying dates enhances the natural sweetness of the fruit. Medjool dates are originally native to Morocco, where they have been cultivated for more than 6,000 years, longer than many other crops of fruit found throughout the world. The California date industry started at the turn of the 20th century and flourished from there. Dates provide dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain moisture for up to six months. The longer dates are in the refrigerator, the more moisture is lost. When storing large quantities, they can be kept in the freezer for up to a year.
Eat these sweet and chewy medjool dates on their own as a snack, on a charcuterie or cheese plate, mixed into desserts and baked goods, and on top of smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, and cereal. Mix with other dried fruits, nuts, seeds, and even chocolate for your own snack mix or as part of a homemade granola. Try dipping in chocolate for a super sweet treat, or stuff with a pistachio or two. They add a natural sweetness to homemade granola bars, and can be chopped up and mixed with chia seeds, oats, nut butter, and chocolate for homemade "power" balls.
